Alkagesta Initiates Defamation Proceedings Against the Maltese Herald

The Sliema-based commodity trading house has filed a complaint in Malta's Court of Magistrates over what it describes as nearly a year of false and unevidenced reporting, amplified by pay-to-play mirror sites.

Alkagesta has begun legal action against the Maltese Herald, filing a complaint in Malta's Court of Magistrates over a series of articles the commodity trading house describes as defamatory and libellous. The announcement was published by the company on 18 September 2026 from its base in Sliema, Malta.

In its statement, Alkagesta said the publication had "made and repeated entirely false, damaging and unevidenced statements about the company" for nearly a year, and had continued to do so despite repeated attempts by the company to engage and set out the facts.

A step the company says it did not take lightly

The trader framed the filing as a last resort rather than an opening move. "This is not a decision Alkagesta has taken lightly," the statement reads. "Despite several requests for engagement and presentation of the facts, the Maltese Herald did not retract and correct the offending articles and references."

The company said it remains open to resolving the matter amicably if the publication issues an apology and retracts the articles in question, which it argues "serve no legitimate purpose other than to cause unjustified commercial harm".

The mirror-site problem

A notable element of the statement is its reference to amplification. Alkagesta said that because the allegations have been "mirrored by pay-to-play sites", it was left with no alternative but to initiate proceedings.

That echoes a pattern our newsroom has [documented separately](/news/antikor-network-defamatory-news-mirror-domains): clusters of near-identical outlets that republish a single unsourced claim word-for-word across dozens of rotating domains, so that removing one copy achieves little. For a physical trading business, the commercial consequence is concrete — counterparty screening, bank onboarding and insurance reviews all draw on open-source searches.

Why reputation is operational in commodity trading

Trading houses live on credit lines and counterparty confidence. Alkagesta's own published material sets out how it approaches trade finance, risk management and shipping and logistics — disciplines in which a bank's or charterer's view of a counterparty is not a soft matter.

The company has expanded materially over the past two years, reporting [record first-half results for 2026](/news/alkagesta-record-h1-2026-results), moving into [jet fuel supply through NATO-linked pipeline infrastructure](/news/alkagesta-the-national-nato-ceps-jet-fuel) and building out a [biofuels origination desk](/news/alkagesta-way-biofuels-origination-strategy) in Geneva. Its business model and the range of products it trades both depend on long-dated relationships with suppliers, banks and shipowners.

No further comment

Alkagesta said it will not comment further on the proceedings "until the proper legal process has been allowed to run its course". The Maltese Herald had not published a retraction at the time of the company's announcement.

Nova Commodity Trading notes that the allegations at issue are contested and unproven, and that the proceedings are at an early stage. We report the filing and the company's statement; we do not restate the underlying claims.
