UK's First Offshore CCS Project Begins Construction in Southern North Sea
Offshore construction has commenced for the UK's initial offshore carbon capture and storage project, with the arrival of Saipem's pipelaying vessel in the Southern North Sea.
Offshore construction for the UK's first offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) project has started, as Saipem's 325-meter-long vessel, Castorone, arrived in the Southern North Sea to commence pipelaying, Offshore Energy reported.
The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) project is situated approximately 75 kilometers east of Flamborough Head. It includes an onshore CO2 gathering network, compression facilities, and a 145-kilometer offshore pipeline. This pipeline will connect to subsea injection facilities within the Endurance saline aquifer, located about 1,000 meters beneath the North Sea seabed.
During the offshore phase, the Castorone vessel is slated to utilise nearly 3,000 tons of marine biofuel, which is expected to reduce emissions associated with construction activities. Concurrently, Sonardyne's environmental monitoring technology will be employed to collect seabed data and monitor the marine environment, aiming to verify the long-term safety of carbon storage, according to NEP, a joint venture comprising BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies.
Project Milestones and Decarbonisation
Rich Denny, Managing Director at NEP, noted the progress, stating that the arrival of Castorone to begin laying linepipe signifies the pace and scale of advancements. Denny described this as more than an engineering milestone, characterising it as a significant moment for the East Coast Cluster, industrial decarbonisation efforts, and the UK's progression towards net zero emissions. He added that the infrastructure being built has the potential to support job creation, attract investment to the region, and contribute to a cleaner future.
The project anticipates that storage operations at the site will commence in 2028. This would mark it as the UK's first operational CCS project. The initial phase is projected to store up to 100 million tons of CO2 in the Endurance aquifer over a 25-year period.
Environmental Monitoring and Scope
The project's offshore campaign will incorporate environmental monitoring to ensure the integrity of the carbon storage. Sonardyne's technology is tasked with gathering data to help oversee the marine environment. This monitoring is intended to verify the long-term safety of the carbon storage process within the Endurance saline aquifer, according to the information provided by NEP.
