Sea Pioneer Identified as Buyer in SK Oceanplant Aframax Order
Greek owner Sea Pioneer Shipping has been identified as the client behind SK Oceanplant's recent order for six firm and two optional aframax tankers, marking a significant return to crude carriers for the company.

Greek shipping company Sea Pioneer Shipping has been revealed as the unnamed client behind SK Oceanplant's recent order for up to eight aframax tankers, as reported by Splash247. The order, announced by SK Oceanplant on 31 August 2026, involves six firm 115,000 dwt crude carriers with an option for two additional vessels. Market sources have identified the Vasilis Bacolitsas-led company as the customer.
SK Oceanplant initially stated the firm portion of the contract was valued at approximately KRW600bn (USD437m). Should both options be exercised, the total package could reach KRW800bn (USD583m). This order represents SK Oceanplant's first contract with a Greek shipowner.
The firm vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and the first half of 2030. For Sea Pioneer, this deal signifies a substantial re-entry into the crude tanker sector and will introduce the largest ships to its operational fleet.
Fleet Renewal and Historical Context
Over the past two years, Sea Pioneer, based in Athens, has focused on renewing its diverse fleet, which includes both tankers and dry bulk vessels. In May 2026, the company reported that between 2024 and early 2026, it had divested four older vessels and acquired seven newbuildings. These additions comprised three kamsarmax bulkers and four tankers.
Sea Pioneer's engagement with aframax tankers dates back to 2000, when it made its initial crude aframax acquisition. Its first newbuilding programme, undertaken in 2006, involved four 50,500 dwt IMO2/3 product tankers constructed at GSI.
Significance for SK Oceanplant
This order holds particular importance for SK Oceanplant, formerly known as Samkang M&T. The yard has primarily concentrated on offshore wind structures in recent years and is currently in the process of rebuilding its commercial shipbuilding operations. The contract for these aframax tankers contributes to this objective.
The order also coincides with a change in ownership at SK Oceanplant. A consortium linked to D-Ocean Asset Management and Kang Duk-soo, a former STX Group architect, is acquiring the business for approximately KRW410bn (USD298m). This transaction marks the return of a prominent South Korean shipbuilding figure to the sector.
