The 24-meter-long unmanned surface vessel (USV) Challenger has completed its initial fully remote project, according to a report by Offshore Energy. The vessel, owned by a joint venture comprising DeepOcean, Solstad Offshore, and Østensjø Rederi, conducted both vessel and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operations entirely from an onshore remote operations center (ROC) located in Haugesund.

Construction of the USV began in March 2024 at GONDAN Shipbuilders, following an order from the joint venture company USV A/S. The project's objective is to enhance subsea operations while aiming for a reduction of over 90% in CO2 emissions compared to conventional methods.

The Challenger was floated out at the Astilleros Gondán shipyard in February 2025. This was followed by a naming ceremony in March and subsequent delivery in May of the same year.

Project Scope and Outcomes

DeepOcean confirmed on 4 September that the Challenger had successfully completed its first fully remote assignment. The scope of work involved simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) alongside the vessel BB Ocean.

The project focused on ROV-based adjustment and disconnection of a subsea manifold protection roof structure. This work supported installation activities at Equinor's Kårstø Subsea Test Centre.

Johnny-Andrè Spangberg, Group BD Director & USV Lead at DeepOcean, stated, as reported by Offshore Energy, that the successful delivery of this subsea scope for Equinor marked a significant milestone for their USV programme. He added that it demonstrated the capabilities of next-generation subsea services.

Vessel Specifications

The Challenger was designed by Salt Ship Design. It features a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, which facilitates remote operation and allows for an autonomy of up to 30 days at sea.
