Bayraktar Shipping Orders Feeder Containership Newbuilds in China
Turkish owner Bayraktar Shipping has entered the newbuilding market, with reports linking the company to an order for feeder containerships at China Merchants Industry Group's Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard.

Turkish firm Bayraktar Shipping has reportedly ordered two firm 1,800 TEU feeder containerships in China, with an option for two additional vessels. Brokers have linked the Istanbul-based company to the newbuilds, which are slated for construction at China Merchants Industry Group's Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard.
The two firm vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029, according to a report from Splash 247. Specific details regarding the contract price, propulsion systems, or the declaration dates for the options have not been disclosed.
European brokers currently estimate the cost of a standard Chinese-built feeder containership of this size at approximately $32m. This implies an estimated value of around $64m for the firm pair, potentially rising to $128m if both options are exercised.
Fleet Expansion and Strategy
These new containerships are expected to become the largest container vessels within Bayraktar's fleet. Turkish shipping reports indicate the company's current operational fleet comprises seven container ships, three supramax bulkers, and two multipurpose vessels. The company's own website lists a broader portfolio, including dry bulk, multipurpose, container, and general cargo tonnage, totalling approximately 235,000 dwt.
The order marks Bayraktar's first newbuilding delivery since 2011, when it took delivery of a 58,450 dwt supramax vessel from South Korea's SPP Shipbuilding. Bayraktar's strategic objectives include expanding its presence in both dry bulk and containership segments, with a particular focus on smaller boxships up to 2,500 TEU.
Shipyard Revival and Other Orders
The Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard, where Bayraktar's newbuilds are reportedly booked, has recently recommenced newbuilding operations. Splash 247 previously reported in February that China Merchants was restoring shipbuilding activities at the Wuhan facility, following a period from 2018 where it had focused on repair work and steel fabrication.
Since its revival, the shipyard has established 1,800 TEU feeders as a core product offering. Other orders at Wuhan Qingshan include ten vessels for Shanghai-listed Zhonggu Logistics, reported in April. Additionally, Sinotrans has placed orders for two batches of four ships, and Greece's Goldenport Shipmanagement has been linked to another three newbuilds at the yard.
