Baltic Dry Index Retreats Following Three-Day Advance
The Baltic Dry Index experienced a decline on Monday, breaking a recent upward trend, though remaining near levels not seen since October 2021.
The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, decreased by 1.4% to 3,575 points on Monday. This decline ended a three-day period of gains, as reported by Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide, citing Trading Economics data.
Despite the reduction, the index remained close to its highest valuation since October 2021.
Sub-Indices Performance
Specific sub-indices within the dry bulk market also showed varied movements. The capesize index, typically associated with 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, saw a 2.2% reduction, falling to 6,286 points. This marked the end of a three-day winning streak for capesize rates, although the index remained near its peak since December 2023.
The panamax index, which tracks vessels capable of carrying approximately 60,000 to 70,000 tons of commodities such as coal or grain, recorded a decline for the second consecutive session. It decreased by 0.7% to 2,431 points.
Smaller Vessel Segments
Conversely, among smaller vessel categories, the supramax index registered an increase. This index rose by 0.4%, reaching 1,682 points on Monday, according to the same source.
