The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, rose by 5.5% to 3,331 points on Wednesday, marking its highest point since December 2023. Gains were observed across vessel segments, led by larger ships, Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide reported, citing Trading Economics.

Capesize and Panamax Performance

The capesize index, which typically handles cargoes of approximately 150,000 tons including iron ore and coal, saw an 8.1% increase. This pushed the index to 5,642 points, its highest level since December, supported by robust activity in both the Atlantic and Pacific regions, despite weaker iron ore futures. The panamax index, tracking vessels that carry between 60,000 and 70,000 tons of commodities such as coal or grain, climbed by 2.9% to 2,429 points. This marked an over three-week high and represented the eighth consecutive session of gains for the segment.

Supramax Segment Activity

Among smaller vessel categories, the supramax index recorded a further increase of 0.7%, reaching 1,657 points. The overall rise in the Baltic Dry Index reflects broad-based strength in dry bulk freight rates.
