Sumitomo Corporation Global Metals (SCGM) and TFI Marine Limited have established a partnership focused on developing and implementing innovative mooring solutions for floating offshore wind and broader offshore energy initiatives. This collaboration is designed to facilitate and expedite the deployment of floating offshore wind technology, both in Japan and internationally, contributing to global decarbonisation efforts and energy security.

According to MarineLink/Maritime Reporter, mooring systems represent significant cost and risk elements within floating offshore wind projects. As developments progress into deeper waters and towards commercial operational scales, there is a growing demand from developers for mooring solutions that can mitigate loads, extend component lifespan, and reduce overall costs, without introducing new project risks.

Advancing Mooring Technology

The partnership will concentrate on introducing the SeaSpring, a load and fatigue reduction component developed by TFI Marine. This technology is intended for application in projects located in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, while also supporting the broader international adoption of next-generation mooring solutions. TFI Marine has designed the SeaSpring component to integrate into mooring lines, where it functions to decrease peak loads and enhance fatigue performance. This innovation allows for the use of smaller mooring chains, synthetic fibre ropes, anchors, and other components.

Implementing the SeaSpring is anticipated to result in reductions in installation time and vessel requirements. The overall effect is a decrease in both capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) for projects, directly contributing to a lower levelised cost of energy. The SeaSpring has received certification from DNV and ClassNK, affirming its compliance with industry standards.

Supply Chain and Global Reach

SCGM, which serves as the central entity for Sumitomo Corporation Group's global steel-related businesses, identifies equipment and materials for offshore wind facilities as a key growth sector for its Plate & Construction Steel Products division. The company actively collaborates with various industry partners to ensure Japan's access to offshore energy technology. In this new partnership, SCGM will provide its expertise in supply chain management and resilience, leveraging its established relationships across the energy sector and its industrial network.

This role is expected to support the establishment of Japanese manufacturing capabilities and component supply globally. The two companies plan to engage with project developers, Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) contractors, and other stakeholders in the floating offshore wind sector to accelerate the early adoption of these innovative mooring solutions. Additionally, SCGM and TFI Marine have agreed to investigate the potential for manufacturing SeaSpring components within Japan. This initiative aims to foster local supply chain development and increase local content for Japanese floating offshore wind projects, as reported by MarineLink/Maritime Reporter on 6 October 2026.
